Is artificial grass the same as Astro Turf?

Many people wonder if artificial grass is astro turf. Why do we call it Astro Turf. There is a bit of a story behind this. Astro Turf is an American brand name. It was invented by Donald Elbert, James Faria, and Robert Wright for sports use. It was given its name when in 1966 when it was installed in the Houston Astrodome stadium. The brand name is owned by a company in the USA. Although people often use this word to talk about artificial grass products in general, the term Astro Turf should really be used to talk about the products made by this company. We are often asked for Astro Turf, but when people say this they are really looking for artificial grass or fake grass.

Since Astro Turf was invented, artificial grass products have changed beyond recognition. From nylon in the early days, and mainly sports use, the products have now become available in a range of materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene. A range of colours is also available. Some premium products have different kinds of grass, for example a thatched layer for extra realism, and with these products it can be incredibly hard to see the difference between the artificial grass and real grass. Spotting fake grass is not easy! The uses of artificial grass have also increased. From sporting use in the early days, uses have increased to include display surfaces, gardens in private homes and playing surfaces for children. Whatever your needs, there is probably the right product to meet them.
